Discover the heart of the Swedish industrial revolution. From the deep iron mines of Dannemora to the world’s most well-preserved forge villages, this journey takes you through centuries of master craftsmanship, royal drama, and manor house elegance.
Day 1 –
The Ore and the Fire: Dannemora & Österbybruk
Morning: Into the Depths at Dannemora Mine The journey begins at the source: the Dannemora Mine. Dating back to 1481, this site once produced the “silver of the mountain,” the high-quality ore that laid the foundation for Sweden’s most important export for centuries: Walloon bar iron. During the guided tour, you will experience the mighty open-pit mines and hear the echoes of history in the deep silence.
The Adventure Option: For the daring, experience the mine like never before by climbing the Via Ferrata inside the historic mining area—a thrilling way to feel the scale of the massive open pits.
The Living Forge of Österbybruk
Experience Österbybruk, home to the world’s only remaining functional 17th-century Walloon forge. Follow the “Way of the Iron” from raw ore to finished product. The visit includes the Blacksmith’s Cottage, a preserved home from the turn of the 20th century, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the legendary Walloon craftsmen.
Lunch in a Historic Setting Enjoy a classic Swedish meal.
Afternoon: Manor House Grandeur
We conclude the afternoon at the magnificent Österbybruk Manor. Built in the 1700s and surrounded by lush French parks and shimmering mirror ponds, this estate was the seat of power for the wealthy Iron Masters. Your guide will lead you through restored 18th-century interiors, sharing stories of the Iron Masters’ lavish lifestyles, the once-renowned art collections, and the families who shaped Sweden’s industrial destiny.
